New York City Drone Laws

Highlighting the historical misconception that flying drones was illegal in NYC until 2021, the coalition emphasizes the detrimental impact on the local drone economy, businesses, and operators. Incarceration and citation of drone operators operating under FAA Part 107 further underscore the need for change. The current permitting process, with a mandatory two-week notice, poses challenges for various industries, prompting the coalition to engage with council members to establish a more reasonable process for obtaining takeoff and landing permits within the city.

A critical concern is the apparent lack of expertise among those responsible for approving/denying permits, amplifying the complexity of the process. As a coalition, we strive to garner attention, educate council members, and advocate for a more informed and efficient permitting system. FAA-licensed drone operators and businesses reliant on drone services are urged to join this effort to modernize New York City through drone technology and establish a permitting system conducive to the growth of this vital industry.
